Who we are

Founded in 2001 METEC is a non-profit 501c(3) organization that was established to provide economic opportunities for families that live in Peoria, specifically those earning low-to moderate wages. We believe the road to improving ones economic well being, starts with financial literacy. Financial education is the core of every program METEC offers. METEC is a HUD-approved housing counseling supplier with expertise in homeownership and downpayment program administration. Our programs now serve more than seven counties including Peoria, Knox, Tazewell, Stark, Woodford, Mason, and Fulton.

Empowering families and individuals to improve their financial well-being through housing counseling, credit counseling, financial education, and employment preparation.

"METEC was a great program that needs to have more publicity in the Central Illinois area. Cheryll and Fred worked with me extensively to make sure that I still had access to funds even when my income went up and possibly limited availability of grant money.

"The Keys to Home Ownership is an educational program that really gives good insight to the costs and process of owning a home. While I still have a lot to learn, this course is a good beginners course, especially for those who want home ownership but do not know much about what is involved. It helps eliminate the people who decide that home ownership may not be right for them at this moment in their lives, as it is truthful about complications, costs, and possible issues. METEC administrators access to a great program for helping people with limited income get started on building assets and giving their families a chance to stabilize their financial situation.

"Since beginning the process with METEC and taking the online class, I have purchased a home in Peoria and was able to avoid private mortgage insurance by having the grant money as my down payment. There were several hiccups in the closing process that were brought about by this program, but Cheryll and Fred helped me work through them and in the end it was worth it. Personalizing a house and having a place to call home for my small family has really given me a sense of stability and accomplishment, as I know many people my age (24) would not be in position to purchase a home otherwise.

"I have since recommended this grant and other METEC services to several of my co-workers and friends, as I feel that not enough people know about the opportunities that exist for acquiring a home. Peoria and central Illinois is a good place to call home, and not all areas have the help or financial resources to be able to provide help to those who could use it most. Homeownership isn’t for everyone, but for those of us who have chosen it, I couldn’t have asked for a better experience."
